After the long, cold winter, this picture gives us so much joy.  It is one of the most beautiful and happy sights – seeing my cows grazing on the thick green grass!   Every time they move into eyeshot, no matter what I am doing, I stop to admire my beautiful animals enjoying doing their favorite thing – grazing.   With week after week of near zero temperatures and many nights where the temperature plummeted below zero this winter, then with the back and forth spring-time, it seemed like winter did not want to let go.  It finally did!  And we are enjoying it as I’m sure you are, too!

Last week we had two new additions to our farm.  Two angus bulls arrived;  one red- and one black-angus, skillfully named by my son: “Red” and “Black.”     “Black” is on the left side of this picture I will have to snap a picture of “Red” and put it in next week’s blog.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Wednesday morning, May 21st was another very special day.  This new baby calf was born.  She is very special because she is the first female (heifer) dairy calf born on this farm in over 70 years!  Mera “Cowey” is very proud.  So are we! Nice job Mera!

These adorable babies arrived last week as well….goslings!  They were a gift from a very dear friend of ours,  Nevin.  They are only a week old now and are already traveling in a little gaggle.  They are in the barn with some 3 week old baby chickens and these little guys travel around the room as their own  unit, separate from the chicks.   Very cute!  Thank you, Nevin!  We can’t wait for you to come back to the farm to visit!

 

The planting is coming along.  We have quite a bit planted already, including: lettuce, mesclun, carrots, cabbage, string beans, onions, beets, dry beans, radishes, rutabaga, leeks, broccoli, escarole, radicchio, chard, kale…..and the list is growing!

 

The CSA and farmers’ markets will be starting soon and we are very excited to see all of you.  We have a fantastic season planned!
